ChromeOS (Up To Version 69)

As of version 70 (September 2018) Google has updated their ChromeOS policy to only allow an app like the Bizplay app (called a "kiosk app") to be installed on managed devices. Any new or recently updated ChromeOS devices can therefore only be installed with our new instructions. However, if you have a ChromeOS device with version 69 or earlier, you can still use the instructions below.

Installation Instructions

Even though we have a ChromeOS app readily available in the Google Play Store, there are still some steps to go through to setup up your ChromeOS device to always startup with just our ChromeOS app.

If the device has been logged onto even once, you will need to wipe (reset) it first before proceeding. The installation procedure below will not work otherwise.

On a pristine ChromeOS device (onto which no one has logged on yet) perform the following steps:

  1. Connect a keyboard and mouse (or something similar, like a keyboard with integrated touchpad) and turn it on.
  2. Go through the initial settings screens (language and keyboard) but do not log in yet.
  3. At the login screen, press Ctrl + Alt + K.
  4. At the Enable Kiosk Mode dialog box, press Enable, then OK.
  5. Log into the device with a Google account (do not use the Guest account); if you don't have one, you can create a Gmail account for free.
  6. Open Google Chrome and type chrome://flags/#autoplay-policy in the address bar.
  7. Change the Default setting of the Autoplay policy to No user gesture is required.
  8. Click the Relaunch now button in the bottom right corner.
  9. In Google Chrome now go to http://chrome.google.com/webstore.
  10. In the Search field at the top left hand corner of the screen fill in Bizplay and hit enter. Chrome Web Store Search
  11. Click the app with the blue Bizplay logo. Chrome Web Store Bizplay Found
  12. Click on the Add to Chrome button and confirm that the app should be installed. Chrome Web Store Install Bizplay
  13. The Bizplay app will be automatically installed.
  14. When the installation is complete, enter the text chrome://extensions in the address bar of Google Chrome.
  15. Check the Developer Mode checkbox at the top of the screen. Extensions Developer Mode
  16. Find the Bizplay app in the app list and copy the text behind the ID: label by selecting it with your mouse, right clicking and choosing Copy. Extensions Copy Id
  17. Click the Manage kiosk applications button.
  18. In the Add kiosk application text box, paste the text that you just copied by right clicking in the input field and selecting Paste.
  19. In the list of Kiosk Applications, hover your mouse over the Bizplay Chrome App and press Set to auto-launch. Do NOT check Permanently keep this device in kiosk mode at this time since this will lock the ChromeOS device down to only play in kiosk mode. First make sure that everything runs as it should. If that is the case and the risk of unwanted access to the ChromeOS device has to be mitigated go back to this option and check the box.
  20. To change the display resolution or orientation settings:
    • Click on the bottom right corner of the desktop and click on the name of the TV or monitor. Or click on the bottom right corner of the desktop and click Settings and then Display settings...
    • When the ChromeOS desktop is not correctly aligned on the tv screen, you can adjust this by selecting Adjust... next to TV alignment and following the instructions on the screen.
    • To change the resolution choose the right option under Resolution. Note: the correct maximum/best resolution is usually already set by ChromeOS itself.
    • To change the orientation of the screen select the right option under Orientation. Note: the orientation of the screen will change immediately after selecting an option, this might make further activities more difficult.
  21. Restart the device.
  22. When restarted click Confirm to start the Bizplay ChromeOS App every time the device starts.
  23. The keyboard and mouse can now be removed and the ChromeOS device is ready for permanent use.

We recommend to use a wired network connection, if possible.

Changing Device Settings Afterwards

To change any of the settings after the installation procedure has been completed:

  1. Turn off the ChromeOS device.
  2. Connect a keyboard and mouse.
  3. Turn it back on.
  4. On the white startup screen it will say Press ctrl + alt + S to leave kiosk mode. Do this by pressing the Ctrl + Alt + S keys simultaneously. You will now see the normal login screen.
  5. Change any of the settings as needed.
  6. Restart the ChromeOS device (removing the keyboard and mouse).

If you have checked the Permanently keep this device in kiosk mode mark as described above it is impossible to interupt the Chromebox from starting up to the Bizplay app with Ctrl + Alt + S. You will need to wipe (reset) the Chromebox before you can access it again.

Improve Video Playback

If the content of your channel is for a large part video (if more than half of the playlist duration is taken up by video playback) we recommend turning on SSD caching. This means that a part of the SSD of the Chrome device can be used to store video content so playback of this content can be smoother. To turn on this feature do the following:

  1. Turn off the ChromeOS device
  2. Connect a keyboard and mouse
  3. Turn it back on.
  4. On the white startup screen it will say Press ctrl + alt + S to leave kiosk mode; do this by pressing the Ctrl + Alt + S keys simultaneously. You will now see the normal login screen.
  5. Log into the device.
  6. Open a terminal window by pressing the Ctrl + Alt + T keys simultaneously.
  7. In the terminal window type: "swap enable 2048" (without the quotes) end hit Enter.
  8. Close the terminal windows and restart the ChromeOS device (removing the keyboard and mouse).

If you have a device with an SSD bigger than 16GB and you play mainly video (more than 75% of the playlist duration) you can increase the number 2048 to 4096 (ie use "swap enable 4096" in the terminal window). To turn off the caching you follow the same procedure but type "swap disable" in the terminal window.
